Sual set to plant 1 million trees
SUAL—This town has began distributing 25,000 seedlings for its targeted one million trees to be planted for the next 10 years in communities and in the mountainous areas.
Mayor Roberto Arcinue said Thursday in a media forum that the town has forged a partnership with San Miguel Energy Corporation (SMEC) and the Philippine Coconut Authority.
Under the agreement, SMEC will provide the seedlings, the PCA will provide the technology and the municipal government will provide the land area to be planted with coconut, cocoa and coffee.
Mr. Arcinue said the initial phase is to plant seeds in backyards of 7,000 households. Each household will be given 30 seedlings.
“After that, if they see the positive results, we will proceed to plant in the mountains of Sual,” he added.
However, he clarified that only those that have shown willingness to plant were given seedlings since no ordinance has been passed compelling residents to plant.
Mr. Arcinue said to further cushion the effects of climate change, he has initiated the planting of ilang-ilang seedlings beside the national highways since he assumed his post. (Tita Roces)
