Corruption in campaign vs illegal drugs

 

THAT illegal drug use is on the rise can only mean more families risk having a member becoming a victim as a dependent user, and at times, as a drug peddler.

The solutions are to have an effective law enforcement, endless education of the young to warn of the dangers of drug abuse and to provide professional treatment and guidance for victims and their families. All easier said than done which explains in part why illegal drug use is on the rise.

Law enforcement has its serious logistics problems, the judicial system has become vulnerable, family moral values are deteriorating. Drug rehab centers are ill equipped. Still, in the middle of all these is the invasive nature of corruption in as many levels.

The long overdue inauguration of the drug rehabilitation center in Dagupan City alone points to the endemic problem inherent in most government projects. The long delay in the completion of this most laudable project ended up costing a lot more than originally projected because some unscrupulous officials conveniently dipped their fingers into the cookie jar to the consternation of the funders.

Mercifully, the center is finally operational, thanks to the commitment of former Speaker Jose de Venecia and his wife, Cong. Gina; the DOH and DDB chair Antonio Villar Jr.

From hereon, the families only look forward to the early and effective rehabilitation of the drug dependents in their household and it can only be possible in an operation without any taint of corruption. It behooves upon the center’s management, therefore, to ensure that the Filipino families’ expectations are met.

YOU are the president of any company, anything that goes wrong under your watch, you take the blame. That simple.

You drive a tourist bus and your vehicle suffers an accident, you take the blame.  That simple. You are a teacher discussing addition and subtraction in your classroom and two pupils suddenly come to blows, you take the blame.  That simple.

You are President of the Philippines and a major operation against “high-value targets” involved in terrorist acts gets bungled, you take the blame.  That simple.

Harry Truman’s “The buck stops here” policy that marked his illustrious reign as US president is a classic because its efficacy has outlasted even time. Has Mr. Aquino ever heard about it?  Or Mr. Aquino never knew Mr. Truman at all?

In short, a good leader knows when a job is botched or not.  That simple.
