Fight is on but it will be a big bore

AL MENDOZA - GEN ADMISSION

By Al S. Mendoza

HOPE springs eternal. So, don’t lose hope.

We all want to see the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight to happen, right?

Be patient.

As I write this, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is into the homestretch of reviewing the final contents of the fight contract.

I will not be surprised if before this sees print, the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout is finally a go.

Look, even as Mayweather keeps saying he has yet to sign the contract, Pacquiao keeps telling the world he himself has signed on the dotted line.

It may be true that, as we go to press, Mayweather hasn’t affixed his signature to the contract.

But the fact remains that Pacquiao has signed it.

Said Pacquiao:  “I have signed it.  And one provision of the contract fight is, it is Mayweather who has the right to announce details of the fight.”

Mayweather is that petty, if I may say so.

The Money, Mayweather’s moniker, wants everything done his way.

Mayweather picked the gloves to be used (Reyes).

Mayweather picked the fight venue (MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada).

Mayweather picked the date (May 2, which isMay 3 in the Philippines).

Mayweather picked not just one date but several dates to have blood-testing done to him and Pacquiao before the fight.

Mayweather picked the manner on how the purse is to be split: 60 percent for him, 40 percent for Pacquiao.

So spoiled is Mayweather that if he should insist on choosing the fight referee, Pacquiao’s camp will agree to it.

Is Pacquiao that desperate to have the fight held?

Seemingly, yes.

Listen to Pacquiao:  “Even if I’ll fight Mayweather for free, and for charity, I will agree just to make the fans happy.”

Of course, that’s more for show than anything.

If Mayweather is lustily in love with money, Pacquiao is no hypocrite and he also wants a lot of money like anyone else in the nose-busting business.

Easily, Pacquiao will pocket no less than P3 billion for the fight penciled to fetch approximately P10 billion.

Mayweather, because of his greed, will probably net P5 billion.

The sad part for the fans, though, is, there is this looming prospect the fight will be a big bore and not a big bang, action-wise.

Expectedly, Mayweather will play it safe and will run, run and run, content with winning on points to preserve his 47-0 record.

A loss would derail his aim of equaling the 49-0 of the late heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.

Thus, while we are dying to have the Pacquiao-Mayweather happen, we might yet end up disappointed as we could only be treated to a first-class calisthenics of pseudo boxing.

Ah, if I know Mayweather.
