Muzzles of police firearms sealed anew

LINGAYEN– Here we go again!
The Pangasinan Provincial Police Office (PPPO) started sealing some 2,000 muzzles of short and long firearms with masking tape last week to help ensure that no police personnel will be involved in any indiscriminate firing of their guns during the holiday season preceding or during New Year celebration.
P/Senior Supt. Gaudencio Sapiera, deputy police regional director for administration, supervised the sealing of muzzles of firearms by police personnel in line with the “Ligtas Paskuhan” 2014 program of the Philippine National Police.
Police officers were required to sign the masking tapes used to seal the muzzles of the firearms issued to them.
The directive of Police Deputy Director-General Leonardo Espina, PNP officer-in-charge, included the filing of charges for grave misconduct against policemen found to have fired their issued-firearms without justifiable reason.
Members of accredited gun clubs reportedly also voluntarily sealed the muzzles of their own firearms as a manifestation of support for the campaign.
In Dagupan City, P/Superintendent Christopher Abrahano, chief of police, led the first batch whose sidearms were covered after their weekly flag raising ceremony.
Still, he clarified, the firearms are still fully operational and functional and can still be used provided that there is a valid reason to do so.
He said, “We are not prohibiting them to use their guns, but we are prohibiting them to discharge firearms illegally.”
Abrahano said all firearms will be inspected on the first week of January to determine whose firearms violated the policy.
Criminal and administrative charges may be filed against a policeman who will violate the national directive.
Meanwhile, the Dagupan police are on a “one notch high alert” level this holiday season. (Leonardo Micua/Johanne. Macob)
