Dagupan fiesta, 400th jubilee year begin

A GRAND civic parade, the lighting of a giant Christmas tree in front of the City Museum, Mass Singing of Christmas Songs and a Concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra in full band at the city plaza, to be followed by fireworks, kicked off the month-long city fiesta in honor of St. John the Evangelist and the Christmas season last December 5.

The relic of the first commuter train that ran the Caloocan-Dagupan railway in the late 1890s is on display in front of the Dagupan City Museum, festooned with Christmas lights.

It coincides with the 400th jubilee of Dagupan (formerly called Bagnotan) as a Catholic parish with St. John the Evangelist as a patron saint with its launching. The observance was marked by a special ceremony at the St. John Metropolitan Cathedral, seat of the Catholic See of the Lingayen-Dagupan archdiocese last Nov. 22.

Some 400 couples tied the knot in a mass Catholic wedding at the cathedral officiated by Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

A Car Show and Exhibit at the city plaza was held December 6 to 7, while will a Poetry Reading was held at the Children’s Park.

Other activities last week included a workshop on literature, poetry and figure of speech at the Abong na Alumni at the Dagupan City High School.

On Dec. 8, a mass baptism will be held on Dec. 8 at the St. John Cathedral with Mayor Belen Fernandez as godmother to continue a tradition she started in 2017 An Agri Congress will also be held at the Senior Citizens Park for ” Araw ng may K” at the Dagupan People’ Astrodome.

On Dec. 10, New Senior Citizens building will be inaugurated and Mayor Fernand3ez will turn over livelihood carts to different beneficiaries while the Pangasinan Medical Society led by Dr. Betha Fe Manaois Castillo will hold a Pediatric Medical Mission for children at CSI Stadia, simultaneously with the holding of healing mass at the parish level. It will be Senior Citizens Night at the City Plaza.

The photo exhibit entitled “War of our Fathers” will be featured at the City Museum from Dec. 10 to 23.

It will be Children’s Day on Dec. 13 at the St. John Cathedral ground, and a medical mission for children be conducted by the City Health Office while The Million Volunteer Run of the Philippine Red Cross will be held along the Jose R. de Venecia Expressway.

On Dec. 15   the Miss Dagupan City Pageant will be held at the Dagupan City Plaza, to be followed on Dec. 16 by the holding of the Consignacion Night, also at the plaza.

Dec. 17 will be the start of Misa de Gallo at the St. John Cathedral. The program “Beat the Feat 2” and the Educators’ Night will be staged at the city plaza. The Dagupan City Employees Night on Dec. 18 will be held to be marked by recognition of 2013 and 2014 retirees.

On the 19th, University of Pangasinan Phinma will celebrate its 90th Alumni Homecoming with a Lamparaan Festival at the city plaza, Transportation Night on the 20th and on the 21st will mark the start of the judging of Parol-making Contest and the Oldest Parol design. Simultaneously on that day, there will be Dalton Clan night.

On Dec. 22, Pawil Dagupan Cruise will be launched for balikbayans who came for the city’s homecoming program ” Balik Dagupan,” the homecoming of the DCNHS or the University of Pangasinan. It will also mark the launching of the Dagupan island Tours.

The Pawil Dagupan Night on December 26 will coincide with the coronation of Miss Dagupan 2014. A media night will be held on Dec. 22 at the Senior Citizens Park to be followed by the Night of Knights on Dec. 23 in the same venue.  There will be fireworks on the eve of Christmas.

December 26 will be devoted to the turnover of bancas, fish nets, fish cages and motorboats to small fishermen, and will be followed by the enthronement and blessing of three saints by Archbishop Villegas in the three island villages of the city.

On Dec. 27, activities will include the dispersal of bangus fry as the fluvial parade in honor of St. John the Evangelist, a grand procession, the MBTF Cup Level 2 Shootfest, the DCNHS reunion at the DCNHS Grounds and DCNHS Night at the plaza and Barangay Night in the evening.

The Rotary Night will be on Dec. 29, Rizal Day on Dec. 30 and fireworks display on December 31. –LVM
