DAGUPAN CITY – Fishermen from the Samahan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Dagupan City (SMalManDaCi) undertook a hands-on training on beach seine (kalokor) construction and assembly on December 3 at the Pugaro Barangay Hall to help enhance their fishing skills.

SMalManDaCi received financial assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 1 and the city government amounting to P625,000 to help improve their income which comes mainly from fishing.

The amount was used to purchase a fishing gear called “kalokor” or beach seine and one motorboat which were turned-over to them by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the DOLE on November 26 this year.

Rodrigo Estrada, president of SMalManDaCi, which has more than 800 members already comprising mostly of small fishermen in the island barangays, thanked DOLE and the city government for the assistance.

“We are thankful to Mayor Belen because she is thinking of our welfare even if the assistance would not really be still enough to help us in our needs,” Estrada said.

City Agriculture Emma Molina said that the hands-on training was part of the livelihood assistance being extended to the ‘samahan’ by the city including the training of their housewives in bagoong-making, alamang-making, patis-making and fish drying.

Fernandez assured the group that she will personally help in the proper storage and marketing of their catch like setting up of a talipapa or small market edifice along the highway so that they can easily sell their products and in finding possible investors to help them expand their livelihood.

During the training, members were lectured on values orientation, net construction and assembly and responsible fishing by the faculty-members of the Pangasinan State University. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
