SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PILOT PROGRAM

THE Dagupan City government added another feather to its cap in the field of education.

It was chosen by the Department of Education (DepEd) as one of the ten cities in the country to pilot the implementation of the Senior High School (SHS) Program.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the nine mayors of the pilot cities signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation (MOUC) for the implementation of the program during a ceremony held in Quezon City last November 18 during the 61st General Assembly of the League of the Cities of the Philippines (LCP).

The MOUC described the terms of the cooperation among the LCP, the city and The Asia Foundation for the “Coalition of Cities for Senior High School Implementation 2016” pilot project

According to DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro, the SHS program set to be implemented in June 2016, will provide students with field specializations in academic, technical, vocational, livelihood, sports and arts to prepare them for employment upon graduation.

Luistro said he is confident that students who will undergo the SHS program will be either be “job-ready” locally and abroad or capable of starting their own business.

He also assured the local chief executives that DepEd will have the funds for the construction of additional classrooms soon as they are able to identify donated lands for the classrooms.

Fernandez, who spoke on behalf of the city beneficiaries, said that she and the other mayors had no second thoughts about joining the program “since it will enhance the capabilities of our students.”

Schools Division Superintendent Gloria Torres thanked Mayor Fernandez for promptly acting to prepare all the requirements needed to qualify as a pilot area.

The siging of MOUC was witnessed by City Administrator Farah Decano, Schools Division Superintendent Torres, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Lourdes Servito, Education Program Supervisor Diosdado Cayabyab and City Engineer Virginia Rosario. (CIO)
