Pascua tops Pangasinan chess tilt

LINGAYEN—Pangasinan’s chess international master (IM) did it again.

IM Haridas Pascua won, the 4th Pangasinan Chess Championship, held last November 8-9 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center.

The 20-year-old IM from Mangatarem town triumphed over other woodpushers from Pangasinan and other nearby provinces in the open division of the chess contest sponsored by the provincial government of Pangasinan in partnership with the Pangasinan Chess League.

Previously, Pascua, Pangasinan’s second IM after Rodolfo Cardoso of Alaminos City, said he keeps on joining various tilts to further hone his skills to attain the coveted Grand Master title.

The winners in other categories were John Mark Yanes, a 10-year-old pupil of Magsaysay Elementary School (kiddie division) and Romy Fagun, an 18-year-old student of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) in Manila (junior division).

Special awards were given to Winnifred Boquiren for being the Top Senior Player at aged 60-years old and FIDE master Samantha Glo Revita as the Top Lady Player.

Board Member Amado Espino III, speaking on behalf of the Governor, reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to continue the chess programs to develop more players.

In the closing ceremony, provincial information officer Orpheus Velasco said it is the vision of Gov. Amado Espino Jr.’s vision to make Pangasinan the “chess capital of the country.” (JRM/PIO)
