IN observing the National Reading Month, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the Department of Education (DepEd) Division Office launched the campaign to promote book reading in schools and in the communities.

Last Thursday, Mayor Fernandez led a story telling at the Carael Elementary School. Grade school. The mayor read the book “Heaven is for Real” for the pupils.

After the session, pupils who gamely answered questions posed by the mayor and received treats and surprises from her.

The story-telling session and other school-based reading programs aims to promote reading and literacy among the youth and to continue the tradition of storytelling which is now becoming extinct in the advent of new technologies and even social media.

Dr. Venus Estonillo, Education Program Supervisor, said the celebration of National Reading Month is in support of the 10-point education agenda of the Aquino Administration and the promotion of the Every Child a Reader Program (ECARP).

The LGU and DepEd will also initiate programs to promote reading and literacy among the pupils and students; motivate the youth to learn from and uphold one’s heritage and values; and make reading a shared physical experience.

Recently, a memorandum of agreement was signed between the local government and DepEd for the construction of the city’s first state of the art Library Hub.

The facility will house thousands of books and will effectively provide greater access to reading materials to all pupils and students.
