Earthquake intensity meter for Dagupan

By November 2, 2014Inside News, News

DAGUPAN City will soon be equipped with an intensity meter to measure earth movements after an earthquake.

Mayor Belen Fernandez signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) for the installation of the meter acquired from Japan after the instrument was introduced during a technical conference held at the city’s Public Alert and Response Monitoring Center last week.

According to Phivolcs Science Research Specialist Melchor Lasala, meter is connected to  a computer with access to the internet and all  information that will be gathered will be sent to a server where the data shall be evaluated.

The meter records the latest ground movements in the area and will make information on earthquakes accessible to all via the internet.

Lasala said since Dagupan City is surrounded by bodies of water, it is prone to intense ground shaking and the intensity meter will immediately determine the effects of the recorded ground shaking.

Phivolcs regularly posts information on their earthquake information/bulletin www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph. These include information on magnitude, location and intensity of the earthquake.

To date, Phivolcs has already deployed 50 of these meters in different parts of the country, mostly in Metro Manila. (CIO- Felisandelle De Vera)
