UCAAP JIMMY FERNANDEZ CHALLENGE FINALS

DEFENDING champions Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes gave its arch-rival UPang-PHINMA Flames a lesson they will never forget by clobbering the latter, 93-49, in their second game of the best-of-three championship series to win the crown of the 2014 UCAAP Jimmy Fernandez Basketball Challenge held on October 20 at Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

The three-time UCAAP champions Dukes started swift and furious in the first two periods with rain of treys from guard player Alexander Andrade, forwards Roxar Melendez and Julius Palaganas and centers Rodcel Yanga and Julius Tiburcio doing the post to establish an insurmountable lead of 33 points, 55-22, at the half and never allowed their opponent to close gap up to the end. It even increased to 44, a new championship league record.

“We have shown them that we’re the best in Pangasinan caging beating the other best and that’s UPang,” head-coach Angel Gumarang Gumarang said. “It was a complete team effort with Atty. Gonzalo Duque and his son Nanoy Duque at the helm and of course with some help from above,” Gumarang added.

Andrade had a game high 29 points and 21 of them done beyond the rainbow line. Tiburcio had 16 while Rodcel Yanga and George Alipio contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Palaganas and Melendez had nine points apiece. Unfortunately, no Flames player came in double figures this time, their very first after many encounters. JAG, Jr.
