Mayor Belen to speak in WHO forum
MAYOR Belen T. Fernandez will address the 6th Global Conference of the Alliance for Healthy Cities slated on October 30 at the Crowne Plaza in Hong Kong upon the invitation of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Fernandez will deliver a 15-minute presentation on her successful pet program “Alagang Balon Dagupan for the Elderly” (New Dagupan Cares for the Elderly).
A communication from WHO acknowledged that Fernandez’ programs for the elderlies “has eventually led to reduction in morbidity among elderly, greater participation of the elderly population in governance with strengthened and empowered senior citizens federation/ association and greater enforcement of the rights and privileges of senior citizens based on national laws.”
“I am very happy and still overwhelmed that I was chosen by the WHO to share our experience in our ongoing programs for the senior citizens, an opportunity to set a good example to the world,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez will be one of the only fifteen presenters chosen by WHO from other countries worldwide that submitted their abstracts and requirements.
The mayor emphasized that the city government’s current programs for the elderlies are based on the series of consultations with the senior citizens themselves and their organizations.
“Thinking of programs for the betterment of our senior citizens came easy for me because I love them like my parents and I want them to live longer,” the mayor added.
Some of the mayor’s programs for the elderlies include: *Panangaro Kinen Bai tan Laki twice a month medical mission, Sight-saving project, Distribution of free wheelchair and hearing aid, Free movies every Tuesday, Lola Basyang storytelling sessions, Literacy and Feeding program for Elders.
The senior citizen recreational center which was built as part of the People’s Park at the City Plaza features pharmacy, kitchen, rest room, exercise area and function room.
The mayor also bared the city will soon purchase different gym equipment made exclusively for seniors, free ballroom sessions, board games, to name a few. (CIO- By Liezel Cayabyab)
