Mangaldan wants volunteers for ‘Night Riders’
MANGALDAN – The Mangaldan police station (MPS) has called for volunteer civilians who can partner with them as members of the ‘Night Riders’ volunteer group to help in maintaining peace and order and preventing crimes in the town.
P/Supt. Jackie Candelario, chief of MPS disclosed that the idea of having night patrollers composed of volunteer civilians came up following the increased incidence of ‘akyat bahay’ or robbery in the town last August suspected to be perpetrated mostly by a group of minors.
He said that their modus was to operate between 1:00am to 4:00am.
Although the suspects were already arrested and turned over to the social welfare agency, Candelario said the Night Riders can help prevent such crimes.
A Night Rider team will be composed one policeman and 5-10 ten civilian volunteers that will patrol barangays two hours a night daily.
“However, as volunteers, we will work with their availability since we do not want it to interfere with their jobs or other activities. They will also be trained so that they will be ready and equipped,” he pointed out.
The local government of Mangaldan is supporting the project by providing reflectorized uniforms to the members.
Volunteers must be bonafide residents of Mangaldan, of legal age (but not a student), with good moral character and without any records of illegal activities.
Alongside the recruitment of Night Riders, MPS will also launch the ‘Sagip Kabataan’ program for the youths in conflict with the law.
Recently, the group responsible for the series of home robberies were minors, the eldest was only 14 years old and youngest was seven years old. (Hilda M. Austria)
