EXTENSIVE FLOODING ANEW

LINGAYEN – Tropical storm “Luis” left three people dead, five towns under state of calamity and 333 barangays flooded in Pangasinan.

Three days after ‘Luis’ dumped heavy rains in the province, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said three people died due to drowning and estimated initial damages to agriculture and infrastructure were estimated at P290 million.

The casualties are identified as Rogelio Marquez Sayan from Sison town (but was found along the Camangaan river in Binalonan town); Edmund Rubio Dimatulak from Tarlac City (but found in Burgos town); and Magie Rosario of Sta. Barbara town.

“The damages to agriculture and infrastructure are only initial estimates as flood waters have not yet subsided in low-lying areas,” said Avenix Arenas, PDRRRMC spokesperson.

Arenas said a state of calamity were declared in five towns, namely, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, Umingan, Laoac and San Manuel due to high flood waters.

From the 23 municipalities and three cities that experienced flooding, only some barangays in the towns of Calasiao, Sta. Barbara and Dagupan City remain flooded.

“Most of the evacuees have returned to their homes except for some families in Calasiao and Dagupan City,” she said.

At least 333 barangays were affected by flood that includes 56,554 families or 236, 175 individuals. Twenty-nine (29) evacuation centers were opened throughout the province to accommodate 149 families or 55 persons.

The PDRRRMC team distributed relief goods to the affected families in Calasiao that had the most number of barangays affected by flooding brought by the typhoon rains. Barangay Talibaew was the worst hit, with floodwaters rising to five feet high.

In Dagupan City, 26 barangays experienced flooding and classes were suspended in seven public schools and seven private schools until Thursday. – (PIA-VHS/HIilda M. Austria)
