Mayor Belen reacts to insinuation
IN a statement, Mayor Belen Fernandez reiterated that she is thankful that Navarro survived the lowly act of cowardice of the suspect and wished him a full and speedy recovery.
She added “For some absurd reason, some malicious quarters have linked my name to this crime, for the simple reason that Mr. Navarro has been critical of my administration,” the statement said.
“Frankly, I refuse to even dignify this pointless allegation with a reaction. Press freedom and open journalism have always been pillars in my platform of governance, and dissenting opinions are an important part of civil society.”
Given that Navarro is a hard-hitting journalist who tackles many issues, Fernandez urged the police and all investigating bodies to look closely at all possible angles.
“This demands a thorough and credible investigation, so that the Navarro family and all peace loving citizens of Dagupan may be assured that the city does not tolerate such brazen acts of violence,” she added. (Tita Roces)
