SAN CARLOS CITY- Pangasinan will soon have its second sanitary landfill in this city.

The city government of San Carlos is already preparing plans for the construction of a sanitary landfill and a garbage processing plant.

Vice Mayor Joseres Resuello said in an interview with The PUNCH that the city government is already negotiating with a bank for the city’s P250-million loan to fund the sanitary landfill project.

The loan proceeds will be used for the sanitary landfill (P200-million) and procurement of additional heavy equipment (P50-million).

Resuello said the city already received an offer of partnership from Quantum International, a foreign company, for the building and operation of a waste processing plant.

“We’re in the process of studying the project,” he said.

Resuello said the city government is keen on the project since as it will be an income-generating venture that is expected to earn an average rate of P800 per ton of garbage.

He added that “if the sanitary landfill pushes through, it will generate more jobs for our barangays.”

The planned landfill, to be built in Barangay Paitan, the location of the city’s present controlled dumpsite, will have a sustainable operation accommodating the garbage of the city and neighboring towns up to 15 years.

Resuello said the city is presently producing bricks and fertilizers from the garbage in their controlled dumpsite, which were already used for the renovation of the city plaza.

Meanwhile, the vice mayor said the construction of a new city hall may be set aside for historical reasons.

“The site of our City Hall is part of the history and we want to preserve history,” he remarked.- Johanne M. R. Macob
