These are dangerous times

AL MENDOZA - GEN ADMISSION

By Al S. Mendoza

DON’T look far now.

The answer to the query of whether P-Noy wants another term or not has been finally, effectively, answered.

By P-Noy himself.

Mar Roxas, P-Noy’s supposed bet for the 2016 presidential election, first floated the idea of having P-Noy extend his tenure beyond the six-year term limit that began in 2010.

After a brief, deafening silence, P-Noy spoke:  “I am for Charter change.”

And with that, P-Noy has admitted the obvious: He wants to be President beyond 2016.

Charter change will ensure that as an amended Constitution will allow P-Noy to run again.

After Marcos was driven out of Malacanang by People Power in 1986, a new Constitution ratified in 1987 provided for a 6-year term of the President.

Cory Aquino served in that post 1986-1992 and Fidel V. Ramos 1992-1998.

Erap’s term in 1998-2004 was cut short in 2001 when he was accused—and convicted—of plunder.

As Erap’s vice president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo served out the last three years of Erap’s term.

Ate Glow’s full-term reign was in 2004-2010 in elections allegedly attended by massive cheating, with the late Fernando Poe Jr. emerging from winner to loser.

Should the Cha-Cha push through, the string of 6-year presidential terms from Tita Cory could be snapped with P-Noy’s reign ending in 2016.

Before his declaration of support for Cha-Cha this week, P-Noy was openly saying he was opposed to amending the Constitution.

Why the sudden change of heart?

He couldn’t find a suitable replacement for himself?

He also believes Mar Roxas would be thrashed by Jojo Binay?  Again?

He is the only one capable of defeating Binay?

Has P-Noy suddenly become a power-tripper, if not power-mad?

Isn’t his stance a gigantic hop to veer away from his daang matuwid (right path)?

I think he now believes that he and he alone could correctly lead our nation to the path of glory and redemption—a surefire formula to drown himself in a sea of wishful thinking, if not drunken stupor.

What has happened to the once unwilling president, who would be thrust to the Palace by the death of his Mom Cory?

Has he garrulously, grotesquely, considered himself indispensable?

But how many indispensables lay dead six feet below the ground in every cemetery that you see?

Someone said that all men are mostly gentle, but to test the gentleness and humility of your neighbor, give him power.

Powerless, bereft of power before Cory’s passing, P-Noy, now a four-year occupant at the Palace by the Pasig, oozes today with brute force bordering on arrogance.

Yes, someone also said, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

These are dangerous times, indeed.
