Collision in Binmaley highway, kills 3

BINMALEY— The collision of two trucks here early morning last Thursday was clearly a case of reckless imprudence on the part of drivers that resulted in the death of three persons and serious injuries to two others.

Cases of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injuries and damage to properties have been filed against the driver of the 10-wheeler dump truck involved in the collision of two trucks along Mac Arthur Highway, Barangay Gayaman here.

P/Superintendent Ferdinand de Asis, the town police chief, said the case was filed at the prosecutor’s office in Lingayen town against Jaime de Guzman, 47, resident of Barangay San Vicente, San Jacinto town.

De Guzman is presently detained at the police station since Thursday after he was discharged from the Trauma and Specialists Group Hospital in Dagupan for his minor injuries when the truck he was driving collided with a fish delivery truck.

Asis said similar cases against the fish delivery truck driver, Gilbert Catalan, 29, of Barangay Basing, Lingayen will be filed too.

Catalan and his companion Ronnie Mararac of Barangay Basing, Binmaley are still confined at the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital in San Carlos City. Catalan underwent surgical operation.

The two-truck collision caused the death of Victoria Cortez, 55, when the dump truck plowed into her after the collision. Cortez was then preparing meals for her family and for small eatery in front of her house. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Nazareth General Hospital.

According to P/Chief Inspector Ildefonso Cojpag, deputy chief of police disclosed that aside from Cortez, two more casualties died on the spot.

Galileo Caladia, 47 years old was driving his motorcycle with Doria De Leon, 39 years old as the back rider were travelling the Gayaman road. Initial investigation showed the fish delivery truck driven by Catalan overtook the motorcycle riders trying to beat the oncoming dump truck.

But before the delivery truck could return to its lane, the dump truck collided with it.

Caladia, as seen by witnesses stopped his motorcycle probably hoping to be spared from the accident in front of them but the dump truck did not slow down and instead rammed through them, dragging Caladia and De Leon with their motorcycle under until it plowed straight into the house owned by Federico Santos Cortez’s house and hit mother Victoria.

The dump truck also hit a motorcycle parked at the terrace of the house.

The accident stopped traffic in both directions. It was the worst mishap that happened in this busy road network. (Tita Roces)
