2014 REPORT ON STA. BARBARA

STA. BARBARA—A report on the completion of a number of infrastructure projects and improvement of facilities for schools in the town was the highlight of Mayor Carlito Zaplan’s state of municipal address (SOMA) which he delivered last week.

“I feel that the greatest reward for doing is the opportunity to do more,” said Zaplan in prefacing his address.

Zaplan cited the completed projects for Daniel Maramba National High School (DMNHS), West Central School, Maticmatic National High School, Balingue Elementary School, East Central School, Maningding Elementary School, Botao Elementary School, Dalongue Elementary School, Tuliao Elementary School and Sonquil Elementary School.

The total budget spent for the school projects amounted to P4, 800, 926.4. This was apart from the P3.2 million budget sourced from the calamity fund also spent for various projects for Nilombot Elementary School, Malanay Elementary School, Banaoang National High School Phase II and Sonquil Elementary School Phase II.

Zaplan said “we have to help our schools because our children study here and the teachers on the other hand sacrifice a lot for the welfare of our children”.

He pointed out improvement of gymnasiums are part of the disaster preparedness plan of the town since these will serve as an evacuation centers in case of calamities even as he assured his constituents that flooding is no longer a huge problem here except in the lowliest lying barangays because of the continuous dredging and diking operations of the Sinocalan River and other waterway.

He also reported that the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has validated the town’s request for P120 million for the rehabilitation of dikes in six barangays that were damaged due to Typhoon Maring.

“If this will be granted, the flooding problem in the 29 barangays here will be totally solved”, said Zaplan.

He cited the readiness of the town for disasters with evacuation centers in 15 barangays. (Hilda M. Austria)
