LINGAYEN–A ten-year-old chess player from San Fabian town has topped the 20th annual New York State Open Blitz Chess Championship held in Lake George, New York last May 18-20.

Dennis Gutierrez III, a 10-year old pupil of West Central School in San Fabian and resident of Barangay Nibaliw of said town representing the Philippines, scored seven victories in eight outings on May 18-20, 2014.

Gutierrez’s win prompted the provincial board to honor him with  a resolution commending him for the feat.

The commendation goes with a P15,000 financial incentive.

“Gutierrez has once again brought national and international honor for Pangasinan,” the resolution authored by SP member Liberato Villegas, reads.

“…to be a champion in a world class competition like this needs a lot of sacrifice, determination, preparation, and hard work that acknowledgment is deemed necessary to encourage others in engaging in a similar activity,” it added.

Board Member Mojamito Libunao, former mayor of San Fabian town, said Gutierrez came from a family of rated chess players.

His father Dennis Gutierrez Jr., along with his two brothers, were national chess champions, proving that chess talent runs in the family.

Last April, the province produced its second chess international master, 20-year-old Haridas Pascua of Mangatarem, fifty seven years after the late Rodolfo Cardoso of Alaminos City made a history for being the first Pangasinense to earn an international title. –Johanne R. Macob
