SAN CARLOS CITY—A young scrap metal trader died after a rifle grenade he bought exploded while he was trying to tinker it around 3:00 p.m. Thursday in his shanty in Barangay Calobaoan this city.

P/Sr. Insp. Lodovico Eleazar, city police investigation and operations officer, said the victim, Benjie Mendez, 23, tinkered with the grenade not realizing the danger it posed to his life.

He bought the grenade as a scrap metal that he could sell.

Explosives and Ordnance Division operatives who inspected the crime scene said a rifle grenade is a very sensitive object.

Mendez was alone in the house when the incident happened.

Mendez’s body was dismembered.
