THE National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) regional office conducted a seminar on hygienic meat handling for meat vendors in Dagupan on June 9, 2014.

The activity, led by the city veterinary officer Dr. Geoffrey Custodio, aims to promote and ensure the safety and quality of various kinds of meat sold in the city’s markets.

Custodio said that the markets of the city have passed the NMIS’ standards.

Custodio also clarified imported meat or the “meat in the box” from countries like Australia, Canada and Europe that have been approved by NMIS are not considered hot meats or “botcha.”

“We are regulating and monitoring these imported meats so that they will not be mixed with fresh meats and this seminar is one way of dealing with it,” Custodio said.

Dagupan Mayor Belen Fernandez pointed out that meat vendors are concerned about the influx of imported meat products, which are being patronized by consumers as these are cheaper than fresh meat.

Meanwhile, the NMIS also inspected the proposed site for the city’s slaughterhouse following the allocation of funds for the project from the Department of Agriculture.

“We still have to approve a site where the slaughterhouse is appropriate,” said Canillas.–Hilda M. Austria
