MAYOR Belen T. Fernandez joined the Department of Education officials on May 19 in launching the 2014 Brigada Eskwela or the National School’s Maintenance Week at the Caranglaan Elementary School to prepare the different public school buildings here for the opening of classes on June 2.

The launching was attended by Schools Division Superintendent Gloria Torres, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Lourdes Servito, Caranglaan Punong Barangay Teresita Coquia, Dagupan City Police Chief Christopher Abrahano, City Engineer Virginia Rosario, education supervisors, district supervisors, school principals, public school teachers, parents, members of the barangay council and volunteers from the senior citizens headed by Connie Fama.

The event was also participated in by 21 college students from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore who joined other foreign volunteers in cleaning and repairing the school facilities.

Elaborating on this year’s theme “Making Schools Safer,” Fernandez said that this aptly describes her administration’s main concern which is disaster preparedness down to the family level with emphasis on children who she said are the most vulnerable sector when disaster strikes.

The city government is also now in the process of identifying buildings that can serve as evacuation centers with so far 300 buildings already recorded on the city’s database.  (CIO/LCA)
