Alaminos City vies for 2014 National Literacy Award
ALAMINOS CITY– The city of Alaminos is one of the finalists in the 2014 National Literacy Awards (NLA).
Alaminos City recently bested entries of San Fernando City (La Union) and Urdaneta City, making it one of region 1’s official entries in the literacy award of the Outstanding Local Government Unit (LGU) Award division.
The city earned the judges’ nod with its ongoing scholarship program in formal education and expanded programs in non-formal education.
Presently, the city offers non-formal education programs as Alternative Learning System (ALS), eSkwela project, computer literacy project, and special education (SPED) for children with disabilities.
In addition, Mayor Arthur Celeste presented its gains in the health and nutrition, peace and order, agriculture, and environmental management to lower poverty rate.
The NLA has two categories namely, the Outstanding Literacy Program award and the Outstanding Local Government unit award.
The Outstanding Literacy Program Award is given to a member of a civil society, which has developed and implemented a literacy program that made a positive impact on learners and the community.”
The LGU Award is given to LGUs that have developed and implemented policies, programs and projects that made a positive impact on their barangays and the quality of life of their people.- Johanne R. Macob
