Anda, Bolinao bangus growers warned of fish kill
BANGUS growers in the coastal areas of Anda and Bolinao towns have been advised to harvest their produce earlier this month to prevent losses that may result from low dissolved oxygen (DO).
Dr. Westly Rosario said Thursday that bangus producers must watch out for the neap tide on May 24 to 26 because almost all fish kills in Pangasinan happen during neap tide occurrences.
He warned that during neap tide, there can be no mechanical production of oxygen because there is no water flow and the current is calm, Rosario added.
Neap tide occurs when the difference between high and low tide is least. Neap tide comes twice a month, in the first and third quarters of the moon.
Rosario said his office’s monitoring last April 25 showed a low DO at the bottom of the coastal waters with the bottom level showing critical level. T
“There is a possibility of fish kill in these areas,” he said.
BFAR again monitored the DO level last week.
Rosario said the low DO could be due to the organic wastes deposited in these areas that already measure 20 mm thick.
He also advised bangus producers to lessen their feeding when there is low DO and must seek to lessen the density of their stocks.
He said the application of artificial aeration would help.
Bolinao and Anda towns produce big volume of bangus from Pangasinan, majority of which are traded in Metro Manila and other areas.
