Why Pacquiao vs Mayweather will never happen

AL MENDOZA - GEN ADMISSION

By Al S.Mendoza

MANNY Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. will finally be held this year, possibly in September or November?

I doubt.

They have just emerged from victories – Pacquiao beating the undefeated American world champion Timothy Bradley by unanimous decision and Mayweather escaping with a majority decision over Argentinian challenger Marcos Maidana.

Pacquiao’s win was convincing that is why all three judges favored the Pacman?

Yes, although it would have been much sweeter if Pacquiao had knocked out Bradley as promised by Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach.

But if only for the record, Pacquiao failed to stop Bradley because, yes, at 147 pounds, Pacquiao has now become a bit heavy for that – not to mention that at age 34, PacMan isn’t that young anymore.

Pacquiao himself had admitted it.

“I guess, I need to go down now to 140 pounds if I dream of scoring knockouts again,” said Pacquiao after decisioning Bradley.

Roach could only agree.

Bradley, 30, is a natural welterweight at 147 pounds – and a very good one at that that’s why he was unbeaten in 31 fights when he fought Pacquiao.

Superbly conditioned for the fight in his grim bid to prove that his 2012 decision victory over Pacquiao was not a fluke, Bradley was solid-rock in his rematch against PacMan.

So that even if Pacquiao had landed some terrific shots to the face and body, Bradley could absorb them all in stride.

If that fight was at 140 pounds, I’m almost sure Pacquiao could have scored a knockout.

Now back to Mayweather.

He defeated Maidana on May 4 on the strength of two judges siding with him 117-111.  The third judge saw it a 114-114 draw.

Mine was 115-113 for Maidana because Maidana proved to be the more aggressive of the two and had landed the more telling shots.

I could be wrong, of course, but then, that’s the way I saw it.

And with the crowd booing Mayweather’s victory, I guess my judgment was justified?

Anyway, on the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight ever materializing, let me say it again: It will not happen for as long as Bob Arum is Pacquiao’s promoter.

Mayweather hates Arum and the feeling is mutual – almost.

Time and time again, Arum has said he would not deal with Mayweather anew after three botched attempts at sealing a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

And Pacquiao has also said it repeatedly that what Arum says, he follows.

I like Pacquiao all the more for that.  If not for Arum, Pacquiao wouldn’t be where he is now.

Pacquiao, sure, knows who he is:  Gratitude is the highest virtue on Earth.
