DOLE conducts career and employment coaching
TO address unemployment, underemployment and the prevalence of job mismatch in the country, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is holding career guidance for students and coaching for parents.
Engracio Bailon, head of DOLE-Central Pangasinan, said the guidance and coaching helps inform students and their parents on what courses are now in demand.
Bailon said those taking up technical-vocational courses have an 85 percent chance of being employed locally and abroad, while other professional courses only have at least 15 percent probability of hiring.
“ There are courses that are no longer in demand and applicants with these degrees have bleak chances for employment,” Bailon said during the KBP Forum on Thursday.
The Commission on Higher Education has in fact put five college courses under moratorium, including Business Administration, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Teacher Education, information Technology and Nursing.
Bailon said the moratorium means new schools will no longer be allowed to offer these courses because of the excess in labor supply and the excessive number of institutions offering these.
The moratorium is also seen to minimize job mismatches, especially for new graduates.
“If a fresh graduate is not hired for a position that he likes, he will be forced to look for another job opportunity which is not really in line with his course in order to earn a living,” Bailon said. (PIA1-Pangasinan/VHS)
