200,000 voters have incomplete biometric data
FOR 2016 ELECTIONS
AT least 200,000 registered voters or 18 percent of the 1.7 million total voting population in Pangasinan have yet to complete their biometrics data.
Atty. Marino Salas, Commission on Elections (Comelec) provincial supervisor, warned that if the voters do not validate their biometrics, their names will be purged from the voting list and will not be able to to vote in the 2016 elections.
Under the Mandatory Biometric Act on the 2016 elections, only registered voters with complete biometric data will be allowed to vote.
Salas, speaking during the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) Pangasinan chapter forum on Thursday, urged voters to comply with the requirement as validation and registration of new voters will start May 6 and end on October 31, 2015.
Nationwide, there are about nine million registered voters with incomplete biometric data.
Salas called on the public not to wait “until the last minute” to avoid long queues and delays.
“People who wait for the last day end up wasting a lot of their time,” Salas said as he reminded the public that Comelec offices are open for registration and validation Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, until October 31, 2015, and including Sundays from May 6.
Off-site stations in some barangays and malls will also be set up to accommodate more registrants.
New registrants must present at least one valid identification card and birth certificate as proof of age.
For the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) registration, the new age bracket is from 18-21 years old.
LUZON WALK
To kick off the campaign for the registration period, Comelec will hold the “Walkah Walkah: Step Juan Tungo sa Mulat na Botante”, starting on May 6 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte and end in Matnog, Sorsogon in July.
The Comelec team will be in Pangasinan on May 20 and will walk on May 21 from Sison town to Urdaneta City and on May 22, from Urdaneta towards Tarlac.
The province is also organizing activities to help increase awareness such as ‘Takbo para sa 2016’ for congressional Districts 5 and 6 and ‘Langoy para sa 2016’ for Districts 1 to 4.– Dada Austria and Johanne R. Macob with report from PIA1-Pangasinan/VHS
