BARGES and other flat-bottomed boats can now use the Sual International Seaport following the completion and opening of the project’s Phase 1 in February.

However, Sual Mayor Roberto Arcinue said the completion of the next two phases that will receive ocean-going passenger and cargo vessels remains uncertain.

In its present state, passenger and cargo vessels can use the port as an entry point by mooring two kilometers away and use barges to cover the rest of the distance.

The PPA and the Bureau of Customs have already  posted their respective personnel at the Sual Port beginning February.

PRIVATE INVESTMENT

Arcinue, speaking during the weekly Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) Forum last March 20, said there is  still no fund allotted for Phases 2 and 3 so he is proposing that these be developed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) program.

“I welcome private investors to help us develop the Sual International Seaport,” said Arcinue.

Phase 1 was financed under the budget of the Philippine Ports Administration (PPA).

Arcinue said he is sitll happy because the opening of the port has brought Sual closer to its dream of developing into an economic zone, similar to those at the former bases in Subic Bay and Clark in Pampanga..—LVM
