Pinoys rule Hundred Islands ultra-marathon
ALAMINOS CITY– Filipino runners outrun their foreign counterparts, grabbing the top four spots in the first Hundred Islands 100-kilometer ultra international marathon held March 15-16.
A Masbate native, Eugene Portado, was first at the finish line, clocking in 7 hours and 57 minutes, a record faster than the 9h45m in a similar event last year, according to organizers.
Completing the top five were Alquin Bolivar from the Philippine Army Taguig (2nd place); Hernan Pineda (3rd); Joel Bengtay from Baguio (4th), and Albert Ombaga, a Kenyan national (5th).
50-KM
Meanwhile, Rene Desuyo topped the 50-kilometer run men’s division in 4h6m while Kenyan Susan Jemutai was awarded the top woman runner for the same division with a record of 4h40m.
There were a total of 39 participants for the 100-km run which started at 9 p.m. of March 15 and lasted until to 6 a.m. the next day.
The 50-km division, meanwhile, started at 3 a.m. of March 16.
Aside from Kenya, other foreign participants were from Malaysia, Thailand, and Mozambique while local runners were from Albay, Masbate, Benguet, Baguio, Nueva Vizcaya, Zambales, La Union, and Pangasinan, specifically from the towns of Bolinao, Mangatarem, Mabini, Dasol, Bautista, and Pozorrubio.
The top five runners in both categories were awarded cash prizes, with the 100-km champion bringing home P100,000 while the 50-km, P20,000.–Johanne R. Macob
