Fish farmers cautioned vs. fish kill
WITH the summer setting in after a couple of cool months, fish farmers in Dagupan City have been reminded to take precautionary measures to avoid fish kill with the changing temperature of water in ponds.
City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina said fish kill, locally known as tangok, is prevalent at this time of the year with the temperature changes underwater.
“The presence of red tide toxin this early implies the changes underwater and mostly followed by series of neap tide and eventually, if we are not cautious, fish kill might occur,” Molina said, referring to the red tide occurrence in various parts of the country, including two areas in western Pangasinan.
Neap tide is a phenomenon wherein dissolved oxygen in the water is lower than normal, making it difficult for fish to breathe and forcing them to go above water.
FEEDS
Molina advised fish growers to closely observe their fish stock and observe restraint in using feeds to avoid polluting the water.
“Fish growers should also avoid overstocking or putting a number of fishes in a pond or cage beyond its capacity,” she added.
Meanwhile, Molina assured that bangus supply in the city will be enough to meet the expected increase in demand during the Lenten season and the celebration of the Bangus Festival in April.
“Since these occasions are observed annually, many of the growers have already prepared ,” the agri officer said..—Dada Austria
