Pangasinan cops now strictly on 12-hour duty

HIGHER police visibity can now be expected in Pangasinan after the province’s policemen have been ordered to report for duty 12 hours a day everyday, replacing the usual “one-day duty, one day off-duty” schedule.

At the same time, those on their 12-hour off period remain on call by the chief of police in case of emergencies or as public service necessitates.

P/Supt. Jackie Candelario, chief of police of Mangaldan town, said the new work schedule was ordered by P/Sr. Supt. Sterling Raymund Blanco, officer-in-charge of the Pangasinan police.

“If the one-day duty, one day off-duty will be tolerated, policemen could be considered the luckiest public servants and there will be many more people who would like to be policemen,” Candelario said in jest during the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) forum last week.

Moreover, while policemen technically have no day off, they will be allowed on a six-day duty per week with one day off but remain on call if the situation warrants.

Candelario also clarified that there will be no changes in the compensation package along with the shift in work schedule.

OPLAN SITA

Candelario also announced Blanco has ordered the removal of checkpoints, and instead intensified Oplan Sita, which has been found to be more effective against criminals riding on motorcycles and drug couriers.

The regular checkpoints allow criminals to find alternative routes to evade these but Oplan Sita is set up randomly to check on suspicious looking persons in communities.

Candelario noted that despite the long hours and risks in serving as a policeman, there have recently been more applicants for the job.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) now holds recruitment every quarter instead of the previous annual activity.–LVM
