Seed firm opens demo farm in Pangasinan
A DEMO farm of new vegetable varieties was opened in Pangasinan as well as in Benguet last week by seed supplier Allied Botanical Corporation (ABC).
“We wish farmers to succeed with quality seeds and array of choices… This event will open the minds of growers, food chain firms and consumers to new and innovative vegetable varieties for the food industry” said ABC president Michael Caballes.
Over 500 varieties of vegetables grown from seeds tested in the Philippines were on display during the event.
Among these are heat-resistant, lowland cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce which were previously thought to grow only in the cold highlands.
Farmers also marveled at the large bell pepper and tomato fruits which grew well even in the open field.
“Some of our open field vegetable varieties pass the standards of concessionaries’ customers, who usually acquire greenhouse-nurtured products,” said ABC customer service representative Jennifer Soriano.
Watermelon also came in different rinds, fresh color, shape and size.
“Our breeders and local international partners are dedicated to provide Filipino farmers new and improved vegetable seed options,” said Caballes.
