Dagupan stops financial grants to organizations

FINANCIAL grants that were generously extended to various organizations by the previous Dagupan administration under Benjamin Lim, many of which have not been liquidated, has been stopped by the present city administration of Mayor Belen Fernandez.

Fernandez, speaking during the KBP forum last week, said the groups were supposedly undertaking projects for the poor and so instead of giving them the funds, city hall will just set up programs that will deliver the assistance directly to the beneficiaries.

“For 2014, the grants will go directly to the poor people, There is no need any more for these grants to pass through different people or organizations,” she said.

“I am proud to say that the allotment will be spent wisely. Hindi kami lalampas sa allotment… kung ano po ang naka-budget, yon po ang susundin,” she added.

Fernandez noted that the past administration spent more than what was in the allotment, which was one of the reasons why the city government faced financial problems in the second half of last year when she took over office.

Further, no amount was allotted in the budget for the city fiesta and even the Bangus Festival, unlike in previous years when millions were forked out from the city coffer for these events.

A report from the City Accounting Office showed some financial grants extended to the Bangus Festival during the past city administration have been partially liquidated while others are still being liquidated.
