Pangasinan wins 1st GATE Karate Cup
LINGAYEN–Pangasinan Wadoryu, the province’s Karatedo team bested other teams after grabbing 15 gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals during the first Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. (GATE) Karate Cup held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center Gymnasium last January 11.
The Karate Development Arts and Sports team from Manila was first runner up with 10 gold, six silver and four bronze; while second runner up team, ISKF – Ryo Shotokan Karatedo Club of Bacoor, Cavite garnered six gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals.
About 150 participants from seven teams joined the tournament.
Aside from the top three teams, other participants were SKIF (Shotokan Karate-do International Federation) from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Anda, MKKPI (Maharlika Karatedo Kai of the Philippines International) from Taguig, Philippine Typhoons from Pasig City, UCCP Clad Center Karatedo Club from Ilocos Sur and Vigan; and OSC (Okinawa Shorin-ryu Shizoku) Clan from Region IV, ISKF-RSK,KDA
Raymund Lee Reyes, secretary general of Philippine Karatedo Federation, said the event provides the federation an opportunity to produce more potential athletes from Pangasinan who could represent the Philippine team in national and international karatedo tournament.
Liga ng mga Barangay president Amado I. Espino III assured the athletes that Gov. Amado Espino Jr., whom he represented during the event, will continue to support the succeeding Karate Cups and is looking forward to a chance to host the PKF National Championship.
Meanwhile, Dr. Alejandro Enrico Guadez Vasquez, National President Federation of PKF, thanked the governor for supporting the Pangasinan karatedo athletes.
The Pangasinan team, with 25 present members, has been a consistent national champion since 2005.
Their youngest member is 10 years old while the oldest is 22-year-old Philippine National Team member Jayson Ramil Macaalay.
Three of the PKT members — Macaalay, Mark Andrew Manantan, and John Matthew Manantan – are also regular members while two are reserved members of the Philippine National Team.–Johanne R. Macob with report from PIO
