Urdaneta is tops, Pangasinan is 4th
PHL BEST CHILDREN’S LIBRARY
THE Urdaneta City Library has been cited as the Most Outstanding Children’s Public Library in the Philippines while the Pangasinan Provincial Library came in 4th among the top seven finalists.
Urdaneta Mayor Amadeo Gregorio Perez IV and City Librarian Bernadine Gravela received the award during ceremonies last Nov. 5 at the National Library of the Philippines in celebration of the 23rd Library and Information Services Month.
Gravela said that aside from the updating of regular library services, the Urdaneta library has been conducting reading programs for children during the summer school break for the last decade.
“Actually, 10 years na kaming may summer program. Instead na naglalaro lang ang mga bata during summer, we encourage them to go to the library and avail of our services,” Gravela said.
Provincial Librarian Evangeline Paragas, meanwhile, received the award for Pangasinan, which was already cited as 3rd Best Provincial Library in the Philippines in 2012 following major improvements initiated by the administration of Gov. Amado Espino Jr.
The other national finalists for the 2013 Search for Outstanding Children’s Services in the Philippines – Public Sector category were Davao City, Pasig City, Quezon Province, Nueva Ecija, and Negros Occidental (Sagay).
The search, organized by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, the National Library of the Philippines and the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc., involved 1,337 public libraries around the country and “focused on giving recognition to the invaluable services that libraries render to their clientele and to recognize the librarians’ commitment and dedication”.–with reports from PIO, Eva Visperas
