More forest guards to guard forests

PANGASINAN’s 82,000 hectares of untenured forests will now be patrolled by an additional 46 forest guards hired last week by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO).

Leduina Co, PENRO officer, said the additional hires make a total complement of 63 ofrest guards in the province..

The hiring was initiated by Environment Secretary Ramon Paje as part of the campaign against illegal logging and other forest destruction.

Co said the 82,000 hectares of open forest land are vulnerable to illegal logging, kaingin (slash and burn), illegal mining, hunting and killing wildlife, charcoal making, and extraction of minor forest products like cogon.

There are now 12 forest guards deployed in the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Alaminos, 19 in Dagupan City, and 13 in Urdaneta City.—Eva Visperas
