Amicable settlement seen in boundary disputes
INITIAL TALKS GO SMOOTHLY
ROSALES— The province’s initial talks on a possible amicable settlement of boundary disputes with Benguet province were finally held.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) members led by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr. met with their counterparts from Benguet on November 5 for discussions on two boundaries
The main boundary dispute concerns the town of Sison in Pangasinan and town of Tuba in Benguet, another involves San Manuel, Pangasinan and Tuba as well.
Atty. Verna Perez, SP secretary, said the meeting went well and both parties, having documents to show as proof, have agreed to conduct an ocular inspection of boundary markers on both claims on January 17, 2014.
Perez added that there was a general agreement to “settle the issue peacefully, with utmost respect for each other.”
On the dispute in the 700-hectare area in San Manuel, Sixth District Board Member Ranjit Shahani said, “We have a better standing with the San Manuel claim because the boundaries are more clearly defined based on earlier cadastral surveys.”
Calimlim and Shahani earlier authored a resolution seeking to establish a special committee on inter and intra territorial disputes.–Johanne R. Macob
