PROJECT BELEN
EFFORTS to make home-staying mothers in the city’s barangays to become productive and help earn for their families are underway.
The mothers in Bacayao Sur – known for its guava production, a major source of livelihood for most of the barangay residents next to making bocayo – are enrolled in the city government’s project- Better Education and Livelihood for Employment Needs (Project BELEN) to learn how to producing several delicacies out of the guava fruit.
Leah L. Aquino, officer-in-charge of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), said the program will train mothers how to process guava into jelly, jam and candy as additional sources of livelihood.
“If this turns out to be successful, we will market in a trial pack,” said Aquino.
Other Project BELEN training programs are ongoing.
The city is already training 28 mothers in cosmetology while 30 mothers are enrolled in sewing classes.
Aquino said the trainees can learn to produce quality children’s wear that can be marketed at the Tinday Labi market during the city fiesta in December.
The participants from Sitio Puelay of Barangay Mayombo are being taught processing of coated peanuts and a special variety of spicy dilis.
Barangay Lucao participants, meanwhile, are taught on how to process bangus tinapa.
After their training, the successful trainees will be provided capital out of the congressional fund of P1 million of Congresswoman Gina De Venecia.
The capital provided them will have to be paid back from their sales so the fund can benefit others as well, Aquino pointed out.
Project BELEN is also sending 20 young adults as scholars for the 2D animation skills training of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) through a joint endeavor with TESDA and TechSkills.
The regular fee for such a training is P25,000. Those interested to avail of the program can submit their resumes to the CSWDO. (CIO)
