And the new kapitans in Dagupan are…
IN barangay Poblacion Oeste, eighty-two year old Lolita Vallejos finally prevailed over her son Joseph, 44 and another candidate Alfredo Ordonio in what was billed as the highly emotional political family feud in the city.
She cried when she was declared the barangay chairwoman beating her own son who declined to give way to her despite pleas from his siblings.
Her track record as a three-term kapitana and the crediting of votes cast for “Vallejos” to her sealed her victory.
In Pantal, one of the biggest and most populous villages in Dagupan, Julie Ann Perez prevailed in a one-on-one classic duel with incumbent Lilia Yasar.
The battle of the two women, incidentally both engaged in the same line of business–fishing–turned out quite a bit explosive on election day when their followers almost clashed along a road in Pantal Centro. Thanks for the early arrival of the police and military, particularly members of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT), violence was averted.
In Barangay Lucao, former Barangay Captain Lino Fernandez returned to his old post when he beat Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary Eleazar Quinto.
Fernandez is reportedly a shoo-in to run for the Liga ng Barangay presidency, a position he held during the incumbency of then Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. from 2007 to 2010.
Meanwhile, Barangay Captain Rico Mejia of Bonuan Gueset, which is Dagupan’s biggest barangay, came out victorious against four candidates, including former Barangay Captain Angel Gumarang and Albert Gregorio.
In Salisay, former Barangay Captain Conrado Muyalde made a comeback after beating incumbent Andrew Carvajal by 12 votes. In the 2010 polls, both tied after the counting and during a toss coin presided over by the City Election Office, Carvajal won.
The other elected barangay captains are Eugemio Balolong, Bacayao Norte; Gregorio Taminaya, Bacayao Sur (re-electionist), Herminigildo Rosal, Barangay 1; Roberto Melecio, Barangay 2 and 3 (re-electionist), Raul Sayson, Barangay 4; Cesario Edades, Bolosan; Pedro Gonzales, Bonuan Binloc (re-electionist);
