LINGAYEN–The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) will conduct an inquiry in aid of legislation on the proliferation of fish cages near the 1,200 megawatt Sual Coal-fired Power Plant during their regular session on Monday, October 21.

Invited to the inquiry are Regional Director Nestor D. Domenden of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and Regional Director Joel Salvador of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB).

Others who were also included are Regional Port Manager Avelino Munar Jr. of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), and Leduina Co, provincial environment and natural resources officer.

Mayor Roberto L. Arcinue of Sual town and Ruben Lucerio, Vice President for Operations and Station Manager of TeamEnergy are expected to present their respective positions and new developments on the controversy.

The provincial board’s inquiry is separate from the ongoing investigation being conducted by a group formed by Gov. Amado Espino Jr. to look into the report that some of the 778 fish cages on Cabalitian Bay are now dangerously close to the power plant.

TeamEnergy, which owns and manages the power plant, earlier called on the provincial government to help resolve the matter.

The investigation group is composed of provincial officials and representatives of concerned agencies, including those invited by the SP.

The SP’s inquiry aims to resolve the issue that could endanger the operations of the 1,200 MW Sual Coal Fire Power plant, a critical energy source for Luzon.

Built in 1996, the Sual Coal-fired power plant is the largest power plant in Asia in terms of power generating capacity.

The resolution seeking inquiry into the issue was authored by SP members Ranjit Shahani of the 6th district, Generoso Tulagan Jr of the 3rd district, Napoleon Fontellera Jr and Antonio Sison, both from the 1st District.
