Finally, Villamil Bridge re-opens before Christmas
CALASIAO—After more than a year of delayed rehabilitation work that has taken an economic toll on this town, the Villamil Bridge here will finally be re-opened before Christmas.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Engineer Marietta Mendoza of the 3rd Pangasinan Engineering District said the bridge is now 80 percent complete and barring extreme weather conditions, the target completion date is expected to be achieved.
“The people, not only from this town but from other neighboring towns and cities traversing the bridge, will soon rejoice,” Mendoza said.
Mendoza explained that the delay resulted from the mayor’s request for some revisions in the design and the addition of a pedestrian footbridge and an underpass for easy access to the public market.
The closure of the bridge affected vendors of the town’s One-Town-One-Product, puto (rice cake), some of whom were forced to close shop following a drastic drop in sales because motorists that used to pass through the town en route to Manila and buy the product were diverted to other routes.
OTHER BRIDGES
Meanwhile, the Malabago Bridge that connects Calasiao to San Carlos City was also closed to traffic in July and Mendoza said construction work will take a year to complete.
Other bridges under the 3rd Pangasinan Engineering District that will soon be closed to traffic for major repairs are those in Barangays Sapang, Balingueo and Sinocalan, all in Sta. Barbara town.
Mendoza said the projects are set for implementation in 2014 and are now ready for bidding.–Eva Visperas
