Pangasinan Chess Academy opens in summer 2014
COMMITTED to groom future chess masters from Pangasinan, the provincial government is setting up a Pangasinan Chess Academy, which is targeted for opening by summer next year.
Governor Amado Espino Jr., at the closing program of the third Gov. Espino Chess Clinic held at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center last week, vowed to establish the chess school for in-house trainings of advance chess players by 2014.
“They could spend their summer there and it will become a wholesome learning process for our children for almost two months,” Espino said.
At the recently concluded chess clinic, 156 young players completed the training, of whom 66 were beginners, 57 intermediate and 33 advance players.
The participants were from the towns of Lingayen, Bugallon, Labrador, Malasiqui, Burgos, Mapandan, San Fabian, San Jacinto, Bolinao, Binmaley, Laoac, Sta. Barbara, Calasiao and the cities of Dagupan, Alaminos and San Carlos.
They are training on basics and new tactics and strategies were conducted by experts from the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL).
The clinic graduates automatically qualify in the Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championships, the first tournament of the Pangasinan Chess Festival, on October 19-20.
PCL President Juan Vicente Sison thanked the governor for his support to chess development saying, “Tayo lamang sa buong Pilipinas ang may ganitong programa sa chess.”
FIDA Master Haridas Pascua, on the other hand, urged the young chess players to keep honing their skills by joining chess tournaments.
“Tulad ko na gusto maging grand master, huwag ninyong bitawan ang ambisyon nyo. Ituloy nyo lang ang paglalaro at huwag pababayaan ang pag-aaral,” Pascua said.
Meanwhile, Espino also announced that the Pangasinan Boxing Academy is likewise being planned for next year. (PIO)
