New strategy set to boost Dagupan bangus price
FISH pond owners and consignacions in Dagupan, getting regular pounding by the influx of bangus from other parts of Luzon, is getting help from the city government to boost the price of locally-grown bangus which is considered of higher quality.
Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, in a recent meeting with the bangus industry stakeholders, ordered the establishment of a satellite agriculture office at the Magsaysay Fish Market to record and monitor the harvest schedule of fishpond owners with strict confidentiality.
During a scheduled harvest, the mayor will meet with the fishpond owners and consignacions to agree on a common price.
Fernandez said that the new strategy will help command a better price for the Dagupan bangus.
Presently, it’s the wholesalers that dictate the price largely influenced by the stiff competition from bangus sellers coming from outside Dagupan.
Fernandez, who monitors market prices, noted that bangus, even those coming from Dagupan, are now priced lower than tilapia that sells at P80 per kilo. (CIO)
