LINGAYEN—Organic rice and vegetables anyone?

Advocates and practitioners rallied for the implementation of organic agriculture (OA) in the entire province by local farmers during the 1st Pangasinan OA convention held on September 24-25, 2013 at the Provincial Training and Development Center here.

Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr. described the effort as “back to basics”.

“We are promoting good, clean, fair, and healthy food,” said Victoria Padilla, president of the Association of Advocates and Practitioners of Pangasinan on Organic Agriculture (AsAPP-OA).

Padilla cited a number of diseases could be traced to the food industry, especially with products that have been genetically altered by synthetics and produces toxin in the body.

She also pointed out that OA is not expensive with the use of organic fertilizers made from waste materials that are readily available in the backyard.

The viability of organic farming was echoed by Provincial Administration Rafael Baraan.

The event was organized by AsAPP-OA with the help of Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Training Institute, Foundation for Philippine Environment, Agro-Technical Assistance and Livelihood Opportunities in the North, Inc. to enable all OA stakeholders in the province  “To get acquainted and share experiences, learn about the state of organic industry in Pangasinan and Region 1, and get updates on national organic agriculture program (NOAP) and climate change.

Aside from lectures, there was also an exhibit of some organic agriculture products.

A national level of the convention is set on October 17-19.–Johanne R. Macob
