RECYCLED WATES FOR XMAS DECOR

STO.TOMAS—The innovative idea introduced by this town to create high awareness for environmental protection and inculcate the importance of the values of saving and teamwork may yet set a model for other towns to follow.

The town’s residents are agog with excitement over the competition for the best Christmas parols (lanterns) and other décor for the season to be crafted by schools and barangays using non-biodegradable wastes.

The materials that will be used include plastics and tetra packs, items that could not be re-processed but are included in the newly-launched Trash Savers Program (TSV).

Under the TSV, residents, especially the students, are urged to bring their recyclable and non-biodegradable wastes to the municipality to earn points for the townwide incentive program with the use of a passbook

Corresponding incentives of cash or in kind like school supplies would be given to students based on the points earned.

The school and the student with the biggest volume of recyclable and non-biodegradable materials surrendered will get additional rewards every evaluation period, said Mayor Timoteo Villar III.

“Students earn cash from their trash,” said Villar adding, “in their young minds, students (also) learn to value cleanliness in their surroundings.

Councilor Alfredo Eleccion, chairman of TSV, said the project aims to educate students on waste segregation, make them realize the importance of 5Rs (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Restore and Replenish) and to inculcate the importance of environmental protection as well as the value of savings.
