PESO provides free call to OFWs in Syria
LINGAYEN—Relatives of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Syria can call their loved ones in the war-torn country for free through the Provincial Employment and Services Office (PESO) located here.
PESO chief Alex Ferrer noted, however, that there is a very small number of OFWs from Pangasinan in Syria as their office does not deploy workers there.
Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan, chairman of the provincial OFW task force, said records indicate there are 14 OFWs in Syria, of whom 13 are women and only two are legitimate.
The provincial OFW task force convened last Monday and decided to open up the OFW assistance center 24 hours a day.
LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM
Meanwhile, Baraan announced that the provincial government plans to set up an OFW reintegration livelihood program for returning OFW particularly for women.
The livelihood program will serve mainly as an alternative source of income for women instead of seeking work abroad.–Johanne R. MacobÂ
JOB FAIR
Meanwhile, PESO conducted a jobs fair at the Provincial Training and Development Center on September 20, 2013.
Hundreds of job opportunities from local and overseas employers received applications.
The fair was held in partnership with Sacred Heart International Services, Inc. and TC Nivero International Manpower Corp. (for the overseas job vacancies); and Trust International Paper Corporation (TIPCO), New Life Recruitment Services, and Legend of Ice Recruitment and Services (for local employments).
Ferrer said the employment rate in the second quarter improved compared to the first, with manufacturing industry as the top employment-generator.–Johanne R. Macob
