Fernandez sets sights on new city hall
MAYOR Belen Fernandez expressed her determination to build a new Dagupan City Hall outside the central business district within her three-year term, having noted the inconvenience borne by the public due to regular flooding caused by the frequent rise of tidal water, which does not spare the existing city hall.
Fernandez and City Engineer Rosario are currently eyeing a portion of the Jose R. de Venecia Expressway Extension as a possible location, but the site will require landfilling to ensure it will not be flooded.
Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia is supporting the project and has already allocated funds that can partially cover the cost.
“On my own, I will try to save as much of city funds as I could so we can boost needed funds to build our new city hall,” said Fernandez.
Another option that Fernandez and De Venecia are jointly considering is seeking financial assistance from President Benigno Aquino Jr.
NEW GROWTH CENTER
Speaking during the KBP forum Thursday, Fernandez said building the new city hall outside the downtown area will also spur development in other parts of the city.
“We have to locate the new city hall to another area in order to create a new growth center,” said Fernandez.
At the same time, the old city hall will be renovated to protect it from flooding and strengthen already weak portions of the structure.
Rosario has been ordered to make renovation plans.
Portions that need immediate repair include the wooden stairs leading up to the second floor where the mayor’s office is located, which is also showing structural weakness.
Fernandez already holds office occasionally at the Dagupan City Museum to ease the pressure on the already weak second floor of the city hall.
