Small-scale contractors get safety training
A TRAINING on safety and health standards was conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in the Ilocos Region for small-scale construction companies.
Some 40 participants, composed of owners and representatives of small-scale construction companies from the provinces of Pangasinan and La Union, attended the free five-day training held recently in Dagupan City.
DOLE Regional Director Grace Ursua said work accidents; injuries or deaths in construction industry are real concerns, which should be addressed though tripartism composed of the government, employers and employees.
The training covered environmental safety, handling of construction machinery, excavation safety, personal protective equipment, occupational safety and health, health legislation, and safety and health practices.
A team of experts from the regional offices of DOLE Occupational Safety and Health Center, Occupational Safety and Health Network, Employees Compensation Commission and Team Sual Corporation served as resource persons for the training.
Ursua said the construction industry accounts for nearly 2.5 million workers of the total persons employed nationwide, and has posted the biggest growth rate of 7.3 percent based on the April 2013 data of the National Statistics Office.
