Omega quintet clobbers Mangaldan selection
GOODWILL GAMES
THE touring Omega basketball team built a big cushion against the Mangaldan Selection early in the first quarter, 30-15, and held its ground until the end to finally lead by 16 points, 95-79, during the goodwill games held August 4 at Macario Ydia Development Center in Mangaldan.
The well-known Cebu City-based commercial squad are unbeaten in their 11 goodwill games in their northern Luzon jaunt.
Leading by 23 marks, 53-30, at the first half, the team led by veteran Emmanuel Calo pumping in 19 points alone in the second quarter, pushed the Cebuanos ahead by as much to 27 at the start of the third before the visitors deflected a ferocious rally by the Mangaldanons spearheaded by Lyceum of the Philippines University (LNU) stalwart Cris Cayabyab and LNU Dukes forward Aljick Aquino to slash the visitors lead by eleven, 71-60, at the end of the third period.
But the Cebuanos countered on the fourth with the sweet-shooting of Popoy Suliman and Calo with treys to seal the match, their sixth in Pangasinan.
“Our tour in northern Luzon without a loss including six in Pangasinan like the PUNP, UL, UPang, LNU among others, was a big experience for us,” said Christian Castillejos, the senior marketing specialist of International Pharmaceuticals, Inc. who handles Omega in northern Luzon.
Calo and Suliman both sizzled a game-best 25 points each while Cayabyab and Aquino had a team high 17 marks apiece.–JAGJr.
